How to choose wedding reception music
The guest list has been finalized, you probably have guests of all ages attending. How can you choose music that everyone will enjoy? Here are some tips.
The wedding guest list has been finalized, and, looking it over, you probably see that you have guests of all ages coming to your wedding. You begin to daydream, picturing all of your family and friends having a wonderful time dancing during your wedding reception. Everyone from your lovable-but-obnoxious teenage cousins to your fiance’s sweet grandmother is boogieing down on the dance floor in your mind’s eye. You may suddenly begin to wonder if this is even realistic. How can you choose wedding music that everyone will enjoy? Here are some tips.
  • Count on your wedding DJ
The good news here is that if you hire a professional, he or she will know just what to do in order to get everyone from the preteens to the octogenarians off of their feet and moving. Not only will your wedding DJ have access to all sorts of music, appealing to the young and the not-so-young, but he’ll also be able to mix it up in a way that will keep guests switching from slow-dancing to hopping around on the dance floor.

  • Integrate family (and friend) favorites
If your family finds music important, then it’s likely that you all have some favorite tunes that tend to get played at each family function. These might include popular music, golden oldies, songs from the country that your ancestors came from, or even offbeat tunes that are hard to find. You also know your friends: If you all tend to be die-hard fans of grunge bands from the 90s, you may collectively cringe at any hint of country music. At most weddings, there will be a wide range of musical tastes, but if you are having a smaller wedding and know that some types of music are much more prevalent among your guests’ tastes, then go ahead and let your wedding entertainer know.

  • Don’t be afraid to try something new
Even the oldest members of your family might surprise you with their willingness to dance to something new and not quite their style. Remember, they’ve been to a lot of weddings, and they are likely young at heart, especially during such a wonderful occasion! Be sure that the photographer and videographer get some good footage of your Great Aunt Margot jumping around to the Ketchup Song.
Your wedding is a time for your family and friends to get together and celebrate your love and happiness. Choose music for your wedding that you like, but don’t forget that you want your guests to hear some familiar songs as well. Remember, people like what they know, and that’s what they’ll dance to. If you’re not using a professional wedding DJ or wedding band, and are having a friend DJ your wedding for you, make up a playlist ahead of time, and keep all of the generations in mind.
