Considerations for Your Cold-Weather Wedding
If you are planning a fall or winter wedding, here are some tips that will help you in your planning.
Traditional wedding season is in the spring and summer , but many bridal couples choose to tie the knot in the fall or winter. The weather can be less reliable during the colder months, but don’t let that stop you from getting married amidst the fall foliage, during the holiday season, or on Valentine’s Day! If you are planning a fall or winter wedding, here are some tips that will help you in your planning:
  • Make a backup plan if you’re planning an outdoor ceremony
While it can rain any time of year, the chances of inclement weather are greater in the late fall or winter. If all you’re dealing with is some light rain, arrange to have someone hand umbrellas to your guests. You and your beloved could even get married under umbrellas if being outside is important to you and the rain is light. If it’s snowing, hailing or sleeting, however, then you’re going to need to move the ceremony indoors. Talk to the operator of the venue that you’ve chosen to figure out how you can make this happen. Even if you’re getting married at a park, there might be a way to get under shelter for your outdoor ceremony if you need to. Think about this ahead of time so that there are no nasty surprises on your wedding day!

  • Make appropriate clothing choices for everyone
Brides often choose satin or velvet, or even wool when picking out their winter wedding gowns. Don’t forget about your bridesmaids’ comfort! Many bridesmaids’ dresses are strapless or sleeveless; this isn’t appropriate for a winter wedding. Choose heavier fabrics and make sure that the dresses are long enough to keep their legs warm. Have them wear tights or other hosiery, and strappy sandals are probably a no-go, unless everything, including the photography, is happening indoors and there is no traveling from one location to another. Little suede boots would be a cute alternative!

  • Choose seasonal centerpieces and flowers
You might as well make the most of the beauty of the season! In the fall, consider mums, sunflowers and marigolds. In the winter, poinsettias and pinecones would make a lovely display. If you are getting married in a church during the holiday season, you’ll likely be able to take advantage of the flowers and lights that many places of worship use to commemorate the season.

  • Have the photographer take advantage of the natural beauty outdoors
If at all possible, get some pictures of you and your groom outside! In the fall, the foliage should be second only to you, and should have a prominent place in some of your photographs. During the winter months, how about photos of the two of you in a horse-drawn carriage, covered with a bright and cheery red plaid blanket? Your photographer will have a lot of ideas, so be sure to ask and to share your own as well.

  • Serve some seasonal fare
If your guests will be outside at all, consider serving hot apple cider or hot chocolate to help them keep warm. When you choose your appetizers and entrees, remember that you can choose heavier items in the winter than you would in the summer; you might pick a roasted vegetable medley over a simple green salad, for example, or braised pork instead of a light fish dish. Talk to your caterer or restaurant manager for ideas.
Getting married during the fall or winter is just as magical and special as getting married during the summer. Keep these tips in mind so that you can keep everyone comfortable on the happiest day of your life!
