What do bridesmaids do anyway?
Here are some of the jobs that a bridesmaid should expect to do during the engagement and at the wedding.
One of the pleasures of being a bride-to-be is choosing your bridesmaids! Once you have chosen the best and brightest ladies for the job, though, they might not be sure what they are supposed to do, particularly if this is their first time serving as a bridal attendant. If your bridesmaids aren’t sure what their jobs are, then this article is for them! Here are some of the jobs that a bridesmaid should expect to do during the engagement and at the wedding:
  • A bridesmaid lends emotional support to the bride
Lets face it: Getting married is stressful! Most brides have a breakdown or two over the course of their engagement, and as a bridesmaid, it’s your job to help cheer her up and to remind her that this is her dream come true. You’re to take her side during any and all disagreements with her future mother-in-law, and to listen to her go on about any doubts that she has about her upcoming marriage. Mostly, you should be encouraging; don’t say anything negative about her future family members, unless it’s really a dire situation!

  • A bridesmaid is there for the preparation work
You should be going with the bride to help her choose her bridal ensemble, if she desires you to be there. It should be a fun girls-day-out if all of the bridesmaids are there, and could be particularly interesting if the mother of the bride as well as her future mother-in-law are present! You should also make yourself available to help put together wedding favors and to help address envelopes. Of course, you’ll be there to help decide upon a bridesmaid’s ensemble, as well. It’s your job to pay for your own dress and accessories, by the way.

  • A bridesmaid puts on the bridal shower
The bridesmaids and the maid of honor will get together to choose the theme and venue of the bridal shower. You will also be chipping in to pay for said event, so be honest and upfront right away about your financial limitations. In some circles, a bachelorette party is held in addition to the bridal shower; you’ll be paying for yourself at that, and will be chipping in toward the cost of the bride-to-be’s fun as well.

  • A bridesmaid helps the bride get ready on her big day
You and the other bridesmaids will likely go with the bride to get your hair and nails done. You can also help her get into her gown (though sometimes the mother of the bride handles this) and will make sure that the various items she needs (hairspray, tissues, bobby pins, etc) are available to her. You can help her get into the limousine without getting the train of her gown dirty, and you might be helping her to bustle up her train after the ceremony.

  • A bridesmaid is front and center during the ceremony
One of the most important things you’ll be doing is to stand up with the bride while the vows are being said! You’ll be in front of the crowd with your friend, showing her support on her special day. You’ll be introduced along with the groomsmen and will likely be assigned one of the ushers to dance with for at least one dance at some point during the reception. You’ll also be in the bridal photographs, so be sure to find out exactly where to go directly following the ceremony. You need to be around during the events at the wedding, such as the cake-cutting ceremony and the bouquet toss, so don’t wander too far away (or spend too much time at the open bar) during the wedding.
It’s an honor to be asked to be a bridesmaid, and you want to give it your best effort! If you don’t know how you can best support your friend or family member, be sure to ask. She’ll appreciate your willingness to help her through this wonderful time in her life.
