Tips for a Great Graduation Party
High school seniors will be graduating within the next couple of months, if you’re hoping to throw your graduate a fun-filled bash start planning now!
Spring has officially sprung, and with spring comes parties of all types: weddings, outdoor birthday parties, and graduation parties. High school seniors will be graduating within the next couple of months, and there’s no time like the present to start planning if you’re hoping to throw your graduate a fun-filled bash.
Here are some tips for throwing a great graduation party:
  • Plan in advance
Unlike a birthday party of a baby shower, there will be anywhere from dozens to hundreds of your child’s classmates graduating on the very same day that he is. While not every graduate will have a party, many will, and it’s important to set your date as soon as possible to avoid too many conflicts with friends’ graduation parties. Another important consideration is that many special event entertainment companies will be booking up very quickly, because graduation season is at the same time as wedding season! Book your DJ, your caterer and any other professionals that you’ll be using sooner rather than later.

  • Consider having a fun theme
Of course the overall theme is going to be graduation, and your teen might want to incorporate her school’s colors, but this is going to be her last party before adulthood, so make it good! If she has a special interest, consider including it. You could also make it a party that celebrates her “through the years,” with baby photos, home videos from when she was little, and other multimedia effects. Your special events DJ will be able to help you with this in most cases.

  • Determine the number of guests ahead of time
For many high schoolers, parties are informal events where attendees are encouraged to bring a guest or two (or more!). If you would like to have this type of gathering, then by all means, let it be known that the rule of the day is, the more the merrier! For a more formal party, though, you’ll need to have a guest list and stick to it. Consult with your child to find out what he has in mind, and who he’d like to invite. Your graduation party could run the gamut from an intimate gathering of family and close friends, to a block party where you invite all of the neighbors as well as nearly everyone else that you know! Sit down with your graduate and discuss your budget, where the party will be held and other practical considerations.

  • Keep it dry
With most of the guests being under 21 for a high school graduation party, your best bet for avoiding underage drinking and the potential for drinking and driving is to throw an alcohol-free party. If you do choose to serve spirits to the grown-ups who will be attending, consider having a trusted and responsible adult be in charge of the bar area to help keep everyone safe and legal.
Remember that since your child will want to celebrate her achievement with her friends and classmates, it might be a great idea to hold a joint or group party. This allows all of the families to share the cost of the event. See if your teen is receptive to this idea before going ahead, though, as she might want the day to be all about her. Contact your special events entertainment company for more tips on making the day a success.
