There are many ways that your guests can send you off in style, no matter what your style happens to be! Here are some to consider as you plan your special day (and getaway).
If you think back to weddings that you attended as a child,
you may recall showering the bride and groom with handfuls of rice as they departed the wedding reception on their way toward newlywed bliss. Nowadays, fewer brides and grooms are choosing to supply their guests with rice; it’s simply fallen out of tradition. Instead, many are finding new and creative ways to let their guests say “good luck!” as they leave their receptions. Here are some to consider as you plan your special day (and getaway):
- Bubbles
This is one that has caught on in recent years. Giving each guest a small bottle of bubbles as a favor allows them to blow bubbly kisses at you as you leave. If you don’t want your guests getting all out of breath as they bid you adieu, consider renting or borrowing a bubble machine. Have someone in your bridal party turn it on as you prepare to make your departure, and you can float off surrounded by bubbles without your guests having to do anything other than wave. - Butterflies
If you’ve had an elegant wedding and want to leave one last magical memory in the minds of your guests, arrange to have butterflies released as you depart. There are companies that specialize in supplying butterflies for weddings. One is at butterflyreleases.com. This is a sendoff that would need to happen during the warmer months of the year; the air temperature should be at least 65 degrees to release these fragile beauties safely. - Autumn Leaves
Do you live where the leaves are rapidly changing? If you are getting married in October or November, giving your guests each a handful of brightly hued autumn leaves lets them shower you with color! Even if you are getting married in the winter, you might choose to collect and press leaves in the fall so that they will still be fresh and bright when winter rolls around. - Rose Petals
A springtime or summertime version of tossing autumn leaves would be tossing fragrant rose petals. Collect these on your own if you have a lot of rose bushes, or order them from your florist. One caveat: Red rose petals have the potential to stain your dress if they are crushed first, so you might choose a different color, or you might decide to simply be careful (and take the risk). - Birdseed
Looking for a bird-friendly alternative to rice-tossing? Gather up some birdseed for your guests to toss! Your feathered friends will certainly appreciate your efforts after everyone has gone home. You will probably end up with birdseed in your hair, which you may or may not find a romantic way to begin your new life as husband and wife. - Silly String
If you and your new husband are the whimsical, spontaneous sort, then having guests spray you with silly string may be just the giggle-inducing exit you are looking for. Be aware that you will need to pick it out of each others’ hair and clothing... but that can be part of the fun!
As you can see, there are many ways that your guests can send you off in style, no matter what your style happens to be! Remember to choose something that can be cleaned relatively easily, or something that can be left behind with no danger to the environment. Let your sendoff be one last memory that your guests think about and smile over for years to come.
