A New Tradition for the Bouquet and Garter Toss
While the bouquet and garter toss can be fun for some people, it can be less fun for others. Here is a great alternative that is sure to be a hit!
If you’ve been to any number of weddings, chances are you’ve seen the bouquet and garter tosses. A wedding tradition, this can be fun for the bride and groom. If you haven’t see it, the gist is that the bride throws a bouquet into the air behind her, and all of the non-married women try to catch it. Then the groom removes a garter from the bride’s leg and tosses that into the crowd of non-married men. Often this is followed by a funny and/or awkward ceremony where the garter-catcher places the garter on the leg of the bouquet-catcher.
While the bouquet and garter toss can be fun for some people, it can be less fun for others. Many of today’s brides and grooms are opting to not have this traditional display at their weddings. Here are a few reasons why:
  • Some guests will take this as their cue to leave
Many find it awkward and even embarrassing, and if the cake has already been served, they may leave the wedding reception rather than be subjected to it.

  • Teenage girls and boys are often encouraged to take part in the tradition
When one of them catches the bouquet or garter, this can lead to discomfort, particularly when the other item-catcher is an adult.

  • In weddings where there are not many unmarried people
This tradition places an unwelcome spotlight on the few who are available.

  • Some brides prefer to not show enough skin for the groom to be able to successfully remove the garter from her leg If the ceremony includes placing the garter on the bouquet-catcher’s leg, the single woman may feel the same way!
Remember, this is your wedding, and you can use whatever ceremonies and traditions you’d like. You can feel free to ignore certain traditions or to create your own! Your wedding DJ will have some great ideas for you if you’d like to make changes to a tradition but aren’t sure of the specifics. Be sure to talk these over with your wedding entertainment company in advance of your special day.
