Develop quality questions to ask your wedding DJ so that you can check it off your wedding to do list for good, and move on to the wine tasting!

"How long have you been doing weddings?"

You don’t necessarily need someone with decades of experience, but for your wedding, you are probably going to want somebody who has worked at least a couple dozen events.

If you really like a DJ with minimal experience, be sure that you take into consideration the price you are being quoted compared to more experienced competitors.

"Who is Showing Up at My Wedding?"

Sometimes larger agencies will send along a wedding DJ whom you haven’t met yet. You can't book a company for a wedding DJ in New Jersey, only to end up with an outsourced Venice Beach style wannabe.

"What happens if you get sick on the day of my wedding?"

The one possible exception to the “you must meet the DJ” rule would occur if the professional that you hire becomes ill or has some type of emergency that precludes him from coming on the wedding day.

You do want to make sure that there is another seasoned professional available as plan B, however, if this question is met with a blank stare or a, “Don’t worry; I never get sick,” then it’s time to keep looking. You don’t want to end up playing your Ipod or having your guests creating their own fun.

"What happens if your equipment gets sick on the day of my wedding?"

Same deal here; there must be a contingency plan just in case the sound system is not working!

"What will you wear to my wedding? and also, What will you wear when setting up your equipment?"

Your wedding DJ should dress so as to blend in with the rest of your wedding’s formality. While the crew is setting up, however, they’re not going to be wearing tuxedos or suits.

Stained sweatpants are not acceptable attire; early-bird guests might see this, and it’s not the impression that you want to make! Just be sure that they’ll be wearing something clean and worthy to be worn in public.

"Can you hold our date?"

Your wedding DJ will understand that you need to interview other entertainers, and should be willing to hold your date for you for a week or so while you get this done.

If your DJ tries to pressure you to decide on the day that you come in for an interview, just say no.

The best DJs will give you that time, under the assumption that you can't find anyone better.

"What will you play at my wedding?"

The proper response to this question is something along the lines of, “we create a customized playlist for each couple.”

Your DJ should have a wide range of music available and should also be able to obtain a selection that you have your heart set on if he doesn’t already have it.

Once you settle on which DJ you want, you’ll be asked to provide a play (and a do not play) list. Having trouble figuring out the perfect songs? Check out this article on How to Find the Perfect song for your First Dance

"Can I see some videos of your previous work?"

You want to be sure that your DJ is adept at getting the crowd on their feet and blending seamlessly between one song and the next.

Seeing a few minutes of video footage can really give you a good feel for what to expect if you hire a particular wedding DJ.

"What other services do you provide?"

Many wedding DJs provide services such as:

Asking this question can give you new ideas that you hadn’t thought of incorporating into your wedding. It can also save you money if your DJ offers a service that you had assumed you’d have to hire a separate professional for!

"What if a guest requests a song on my “do not play” list?"

Your DJ should have an answer to this question, because if he’s done a lot of weddings, no doubt he has encountered these circumstances before. His exact wording matters less than his diplomatic and gentle way of taking control of the situation without alienating your guests or making you fume on the happiest day of your life! image:

Remember not to fixate solely on price; in the case of a wedding entertainer, you get what you pay for. If someone’s price seems a lot lower than average, it’s probably a good idea to keep shopping for someone whose abilities (and prices) reflect what you’re looking for. So take these Essential questions to ask your wedding DJ, find your quality entertainer, and move on to the wine tasting, dress fittings and the cake, oh the cake!
